TEDx Whitehall, was an event run by the Government Office for Science and the Royal Society, in association with the TED platform [ 1 ]

I gave a talk exploring complexity through metaphor, and designed the set for the event.

The use of metaphor is according to an understanding of its function in comprehension of abstract concepts, as suggested by Lakkoff & Johnson [ 2 ] .

¬ Optics as Enquiry - Sculptural Metaphor

Although limited by the technical specs of the space, the sculpture design aimed to use the internal mechanisms of a microscope and the interaction of light and lenses as a metaphor for enquiry.

The theme of the event was ' The Scientific Angle ' as such the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection in the operations of a microscope seemed to strike an interesting parallel with the mental process of enquiry. The metaphor indicates our use of conceptual lenses and models to perceive details and forms, the causal architecture underlying the initial image of reality.
