Free Radical in Residence is a role i occupied at AKCG [ 1 ], a consultancy applying theories of complexity to international development.
My role was to creatively disrupt normal processes, visualise complex phenomena, and find metaphors and modes of expression to communicate complexity theory as it applied outside its theoretical context.
Through exchange with the AKCG network, I came into discussion with geneticists, sociologists and psychologists, reacting to the models and metaphors they employed to describe the interaction of complex systems, and finding ways of translating them to apply to human social systems.

¬ SUMMARY

¬ Seeing Systems
When enacting or designing a process of change to affect a social system, metaphor and symbolic equivalency allow diverse variables and information categories to be resolved into a unified visual space.
They can allow for an interface between information and meaning, beyond data visualisation, they can embed data within a narrative or allusive context, allowing the viewer to perceive not only the information but its contexts and implications as well.
